![]() Had you said so at the time we naturally would have arranged for additional cooling units and fans to ensure your added comfort during seasonably hot weather - April being the hottest month to travel to in Sri Lanka. All of our rooms provide overhead ceiling fans and floor fans as well at any time we provide portable air cooling units. Being on the hill in 5 acres of tropical jungle there is often cooling breezes and shade which helps to maintain an even temperature in a jungle setting. We take our ecological responsibilities seriously. Our home stay has to balance it's historical significance with modern amenities. As you point out getting to and from the areas is never a problem because we have tuk tuk transportation available on site. As you will see from previous reviews the majority of our guests like to have these places accessible to them but have somewhere to escape to away from the hustle and bustle of built up the city and Unawatuna. We are located 10 minutes by tuk tuk from Galle City, the Fort and Unawatuna. We are an historic Dutch Colonial Villa which dates over 150 years. I am not sure arranging all of this through a third party booking agent would have made a difference but am happy to continuously improve our processes. However, this was necessary to arrange a deposit during the Easter high season, arrange car transfers from Galle to Colombo, room configurations and ultimately to extend your stay. I acknowledge our attention to detail and back and forth emailing to finalise your arrangements may have prolonged the booking process. More Show lessĭear previous guest, Firstly, I am sorry to read of your experience. The hotel's tuktuk service is on hand as you can't get anywhere any other way unless you have your own car. The cottage had a great hammock and sofa outside. Other tips: other places/restaurants a 15-20 min ride away check in advance re when meals are available on site, and when you need to book the plunge pool is small but a bigger one is one is planned mosquito repellant recommended. Great recommendations for day trips from manager Katrin, and gorgeous breakfasts too. The shared bathroom and small dressing room could do with some love, an extra sink to share between the two rooms would be helpful. We were in the cottage, and on several humid nights found it difficult to sleep (AC or more fans needed). The green garden space is relaxing, and staff helpful. We found the booking experience chaotic, perhaps it is better via a booking site? The cook Trixie makes wonderful food, and is recommended. Mixed experiences at this hilltop villa with lovely, slightly remote location and great architecture.

![]() ![]() So what's the MOV in the AQR board for and how are they going to protect your main board? Well, it's more like of a visual notification for me! If it torched itself and went up in smoke then that's a good indication that the MOV took the hit. The upstream local circuit breaker has no function related to disconnecting an MOV. As a MOV degrades, its triggering voltage falls lower and lower.Īs to the AQR board, Hayward disregarded the line fuse before the MOV's. MOV's have a finite life expectancy and "degrade" when exposed to a few large transients, or many small transients. If the fuse isn't there and there's enough energy available to cause the MOV to melt/explode the final failure mode will be an open and the downstream circuitry will then be subjected to the transient causing the open or to future transients which will then cause questions to be asked about whether the downstream circuitry will fail open or shorted. And that is why it should be preceded by a series fuse. The initial failure mode of an MOV is always a short circuit in an attempt to limit the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or shorting to ground any unwanted voltages above a safe threshold. MOVs are often connected in series with a thermal or line-fuse, so that the fuse disconnects before catastrophic failure can happen. And no way, for any downstream components to induce voltage spike or sags back to the MOV's.īottom line is, nothing in the mainboard is likely to induce damage to the MOV's except for the incoming AC! If the AC power is applied to TB1, the MOV's are "HOT" and susceptible to voltage spike even if the inductance Transformer and any of its wire is loose or not properly connected to the board. Alternatively, the two are in parallel across L1 & Neutral for the 120V configuration. They are connected in series, across L1 & L2 when configured for the 220V operation. There are two V150LA2P, VARISTOR 240V 1.2KA, made by LittelFuse as the primary line of defense against transient or voltage spike. Re: Aquarite - Low Voltage Power Supply, MOV's are useless or are they?īelow is the Hayward Aquarite Low Voltage schematic diagram for those in the need to know. Personal Conclusion: If your Hayward SWCG has the PCB as shown on the right-hand side below then you will probably enjoy many years of chlorinating without having to replace the thermistor. Also, the oil from our skin will adhere to the thermistor making it more susceptible to premature failures. Unfortunately, I misplaced my handheld IR thermometer to give you the numbers. You’ve been warned, Thermistors on the AQR’s do overheat and too hot to touch. OTOH, do not dare to touch the S元2 or the AS32 series Thermistors when chlorinating, or you’re gonna swear by it. You may notice, the SWP board has an extra 24VDC relay labeled as “K4”. As observed, I can touch and hold the thermistor on my SWP like forever during normal operation without getting burned. The Swimpure Plus model used Cantherm MF73T-1, Ø20mm thermistor. The measured voltage and the voltage reading on the display did not match the voltage reading across the Blk and Red terminals. The thermistor was intentionally removed to simulate or replicate a bad thermistor for this purpose. Make sure the Blk test lead is on the Negative side (not Ground) which is the black terminal or to the R15 (.015 Ω) link as shown in the pic. If the thermistor is good, the voltage reading on the display matches the measured voltage from the thermistor lead farthest from the Red terminal on the board as shown. I removed the plastic sleeves and positioned the screw terminals to accommodate both types of thermistors. I had to bump the solder tip temp to 1200☏ for this mod. If your PCB footprint can accommodate both types, then you will be far better off using the AS32.Īs observed, the thermistor solder pads are larger with multiple through holes to absorb the heat being emitted by the thermistor during normal operation. The latter has a high failure rate due to overheating compare to the AS32. The original thermistor is AS32 2R025 which has a wider lead wire footprint but the available replacement on hand is S元2 2R025. This should enable him to replace the thermistor in the future without having to solder. So I came up with the idea of using a screw terminal (Digi-Key part# ED2561-ND) to mount the thermistor on. First off, the board that I worked on belongs to a friend who doesn’t really know how to solder. So I just had this opportunity to replace a bad thermistor on the AQR board and would like to share the easy way on how to diagnose a faulty thermistor. But unlike the Segway, they’re not starting from scratch. And right now, there is a whole cadre of talented technologists applying ingenuity and effort towards making this vision real. As a venture capitalist I can tell you with certainty: if you ever want to know what the future holds, just follow the entrepreneurs. ![]() As noted by Silicon Valley investor Paul Graham: “people don’t want to be seen riding them.” Changing the world is never an easy undertaking-especially if nobody wants your product.īut big ideas die hard, and the story that inspired the Segway might be entering an exciting new chapter. While there are many reasons the Segway failed, perhaps the simplest explanation sums it up best. It’s hard not to admire the boldness and authenticity of that vision, and I, like Dean, think it rings just as true today. We thought it would be a big deal, and I still do. What if we could tell you that you could get from point A to point B in the city at the same average speed as your car, but with the same mobility as a pedestrian, in a manner 100 times more environmentally friendly, and close to 100 times as energy efficient? We thought that might make a big difference in helping cities become more fun, more environmentally friendly, cleaner, and safer. In a world now screaming towards urbanization… the idea that we still get around with a machine that was invented 100 years ago to get between towns and cities and to railroad stations seems absurd.īut what if you could say to people – “Hey, this environment in the city, it was built for pedestrians!” That’s why these buildings are close together, that’s why you look outside and see thousands of people. It’s environmentally catastrophic, it’s inefficient, it’s unhealthy, and it defiles the original intent of cities. Yet, in almost every major city… all of what should be beautiful pedestrian space… is either a parked car, a parking garage, or a row of running cars, bumper to bumper, with people sucking up each other’s exhaust, creeping along in 3,000 pound, 20 foot vehicles with on average one person inside. I don’t think people have yet come to grips with the fact that in most of the large cities of the world, almost everybody spends most of their time going just a few blocks, or at most a mile, between where they live and where they work. This is the inspiring original idea behind the Segway that got buried amidst the cacophony of rumors and headlines and forgotten with the passing of time: Rather, Dean passionately shared the vision that created so many early believers. ![]() It wasn’t an excuse for failure, or, as might be expected of an engineer, a matter-of-fact list of reasons why the product really is so great. When I sat down with Dean and asked him what the world least understood about the Segway, he gave a surprising response. Now, more than a decade after its release, the product has been all but forgotten, relegated to niche uses like police patrols, city tours, and a nerdy take on polo. In stark contrast to expectation, sales of the Segway were a massive disappointment. The Segway seemed on a fast path to be a very big deal. When word of a wondrous new invention and its high-profile supporters leaked prematurely to the press, “IT” became the subject of rampant speculation and hype, the media sensation culminating in a live unveiling on national television. ![]() Both met privately with Dean on numerous occasions to offer counsel and contemplate their involvement with the project (and would go on record affirming their excitement). Tech luminaries Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos thought the idea worthy of an even more valuable investment: their time. Famous venture capitalist John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins bankrolled the effort with close to $40 million at an unthinkable early valuation of half a billion dollars. If there are children present, it would be wise to steer clear of adult gag gifts. What gag is played should depend on the ages and tastes of the audience and gag target. While there are three main categories, g ag gifts also fall into three general categories: Kids/Teens, Adults, General. One way to differentiate between gag gifts and novelty items is by thinking – could this be used by a business as a promotional item – as novelty items often are? Fart Spray? Unlikely. More importantly, they’re not intended to be a prank and are not even necessarily given to be funny. While they’re very similar to gag gifts, they’re not designed for any specific purpose. Novelty items can also fall under this category. They’re often harder to select for a recipient because of their distinctive nature, but careful consideration will let you know whether it’s right for the person you’re giving it to or not. Such gag gifts are often chosen because the giver has never seen anything quite like it and would like to share it with the recipient. Unique Gag Gifts – These are the ones that defy categorization. Other professions don’t have quite as many options, and in those instances, the giver will have to be very creative. Some professions can be easily connected to hilarious gag gift ideas, such as doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, and bartenders. Professional Gag Gifts – These relate to the person’s profession in some way, or to some professional experience they’ve had in their life. If the gag gift is chosen correctly, as soon as the recipient sees it, they will laugh or smile, realizing what it signifies. They’re designed to bring back memories of humorous situations or make the person reflect on some aspect of his or her life. Personal Gag Gifts – These gag gifts generally reflect some feature of the recipient’s personal life, such as their hobbies, favorite things, or some personal story from their past. There are many different types of gag gifts that fall into three main categories, and each category may not be appropriate for all recipients. Also, if you intend to give the gift at a party, remember to consider who the attendees will be, as it might be construed as inappropriate by some guests. Just remember that gag gifts can be offensive but in the right setting, are great fun. Gags meant to highlight shortcomings or faults will make a person feel bad, while gags targeting special talents are often a hit. Make sure the gift won’t offend the receiver, or hurt their feelings, but cause only good-hearted embarrassment. The key to giving a good gag gift is knowing your recipient and their personality. Although it’s meant for fun and entertainment, we wouldn’t want the fun to last only for a few seconds, and more importantly, we wouldn’t want to offend anyone. Ironically, getting a gag gift requires more thought than a traditional gift. There are creative, disgusting, humorous gag gifts, and even those with overt or masked sexual undertones. There are a wide variety of gag gifts to choose from. It’s more of a prank than a gift.īut why give gag gifts? The answer is simple – laughter is the best gift of all! Besides, gag gifts are as enjoyable to give as they are to receive. Gag gifts are generally defined as items or objects given with the intention of poking fun at the recipient. The moment we hear gag gifts, visions of fun, pain, or disgust immediately spring to mind. Michael Warren looks at how the voices of birds had to be carefully distinguished from human speech in order to differentiate the two: “birds’ voices only seem like human voices, but do not actually have the same rational, divinely-gifted properties” (Warren 17). Two recent books have looked at the importance of birds in medieval texts, emphasising both the centrality of birds’ vocal capacities and the place of birds as music-makers in an anthropocentric model. An unprepossessing small, brown creature, the nightingale’s interest for authors is closely linked to its voice, which takes on an importance that is inversely proportional to the creature’s diminutive size and unremarkable plumage. 2 As has been examined by a number of modern scholars: Gellinek-Schellekens, The Voice of the Nightin (.)ġNightingales appear more frequently than other birds in medieval literary texts ( Pfeffer 89), yet this textual abundance contrasts with the bird’s scarcity in its natural setting: the nightingale is a migratory creature who is only present and vocal for a brief season in certain areas ( Cramp 627-631).1 My thanks are due to Michael Warren for his kind generosity in sending me several chapters of his b (.).In his “Defence of Poetry,” Percy Bysshe Shelley writes, “A Poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds his auditors are as men entranced by the melody of an unseen musician, who feel that they are moved and softened, yet know not whence or why.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge, meanwhile, in his poem “To the Nightingale” complained that too many poets kept banging on about nightingales “How many wretched Bards address thy name” and in “The Nightingale,” challenges the idea that the nightingale song is mournful: “In nature there is nothing melancholy.” In “Ode to A Nightingale,” John Keats similarly presents the nightingale as laughing - happy because she is ignorant of human suffering.īy the time Michael Arlen wrote “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” the idea of the nightingale was a hackneyed cliché, and could only be deployed if it positively drips with irony - as indeed it does in both Arlen’s story and the song by Eric Maschwitz and Manning Sherwin. The connection between the nightingale and the poet, both as singers, is explored most fully in the Romantic period. Milton also associated the nightingale with lovers, and calls the nightingale’s song “amorous.” Milton, too, frequently mentions the nightingale in “Paradise Lost,” where it appears as a wakeful bird who is hidden in the dark. ![]() Perhaps most famously this happens when Romeo and Juliet, after spending their one night together hear a bird, and debate whether it is nightingale or a lark ( “Romeo and Juliet,” 3.5). In English literature, the nightingale is often paired with the lark, the former as the songbird of the night, and the latter the songbird of the morning. Versions of this Ovidian story can be found in Chaucer’s “The Legend of Good Women,” Shakespeare’s “Titus Andronicus,” John Keats’s “Eve of St Agnes,” and T.S. The sisters then escape by turning into birds. Her sister comes to rescue her, and then together the two sisters get their revenge by killing Tereus’s son and feeding the flesh to Tereus for dinner. She manages to contact her sister by weaving a message on her loom. In this version, Philomela is raped by her sister’s husband Tereus, who then cuts out her tongue to prevent her from speaking and locks her in a cottage. Ovid tells a version of the Philomela myth (Philomela was Greek for nightingale) which connects the nightingale to both mourning and violence. But the Greeks also heard something melancholy in the song of the nightingale, and it became associated with mourning. In the “Odyssey,” for example, Homer describes a nightingale singing in the woods “when springtime has just begun” (Odyssey 19.519). Most commonly, the nightingale is understood as a sign of the coming spring, its song ushering in new leaves after the winter. ![]() Later, through its link to spring and night, it also became a bird of love.” It has appeared in many thousands of poems from Homer to the twentieth century, and even in ancient times it acquired an almost formulaic meaning as the bird of spring, of night, and of mourning. As Michael Ferber helpfully explains: “The nightingale has had the most spectacular career of all literary birds. ![]() Nightingales are known for the beauty of their song, an impression which perhaps has less to do with the actual noises nightingales make and more to do with their mythic status, promoted throughout history by their association with poetry.
